Spring 2014 Children & Family Classes

 

The Healdsburg Center For The Arts is pleased to announce our partnering with the City of  Healdsburg and the Parks and Recreation Department.  Parks and Recreation has an established program of classes and workshops that it runs at the Foss Creek Community Center located at 1557 Healdsburg Ave,  about a half mile north of Dry Creek Road.  With this new alliance, we will have the use of a larger and quieter classroom with easy access to the outside, and complement the Community Center’s vibrant program with art classes and workshops for kids, adults and families.

All classes and workshops marked as Foss Creek Community Center are held at 1557 Healdsburg Ave.
All classes and workshops marked as Hbg Senior Center are held at 133 Matheson Street

 

DRAWING FOR KIDS
Ages 6 – 10
Mondays, 3:30pm – 5:30pm
Instructor: Gabby Gamboa
Learn the drawing techniques of professional fine artists! In this action-packed workshop, children will develop their techniques in pencil, charcoal, india ink, watercolor, and other drawing media, and explore traditional figure drawing, drawing from observation, shading, color, and make experimental mixed-media drawings.
Gabrielle Gamboa is a visual artist and arts educator, teaching art in Bay Area K-12 schools, after-school programs, summer camps, museums, and community centers for the past 15 years. She has taught media and techniques such as drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking, sculpture, digital art, digital video, photography, mask-making, and cartooning to a diverse range of students.
She attended California State Summer School of the Arts, studied painting and film at California College of Art, and graduated from San Francisco State University with a BA in Painting. She also holds a California State Single-Subject Clear Credential in Art.
 As an artist, Gabrielle’s passion is drawing and painting. Her mixed-media works have been exhibited all over the Bay Area, and in New York City, Memphis, Portland, and Bristol, England. Her cartoons and illustrations have appeared in various print and web publications such as the San Francisco Bay Guardian. She is currently drawing a graphic novel set in 1940’s Los Angeles.

MIXED MEDIA FOR KIDS
Ages 6 – 10
Tuesdays, 3:30pm – 5:30pm         
Instructor: Carrie Shere
Explore the world of creative activities based upon a wide range of two and three dimensional projects. Painting, sculpture, printmaking, collage, and drawing techniques are taught. A variety of materials are used including colored pencils, clay, foamcore, charcoal, pastels, acrylic and watercolor paints, and markers.
Carrie Shere has over fifteen years extensive experience teaching kids ages five to twelve. She earned her bachelors degree at UC Santa Cruz and received her Masters in Fine Art at San Jose State University. Ceramics was the focus in both her undergraduate and graduate degrees. ART FOR PRE-SCHOOLERStoddler4

Wednesdays, 9am -10:15am
The varied projects make learning drawing, painting, printmaking and assembling a lot of fun for the kids. A parent is required to remain on site during the class.

PRINTMAKING: 5 WAYS IN 5 DAYS
Ages 7-10
Instructor: C.K. Itamura
Thursdays, 3:30pm – 5:30pm
Learn to print five different ways in five days. Each day a different method of printmaking will be used to create fun projects to take home. In this fun workshop we’ll print: wrapping paper using vegetables to print with; greeting cards using letterpress; a t-shirt using screen printing; a notebook using soft blocks; and a colorful collagraph print worthy of framing.

Her work blurs the lines between mediums as she combines letterpress and reduction linocut printing with photography, social commentary, personal idealism, live presentation and mixed media. Her studio, Peach Farm Studio is based in Sonoma County, California. ORIGAMI GONE WILD
Ages 9 – 12

Wednesdays, 3:30pm – 5:30pm
Origami is the traditional Japanese art form of folding paper. In this fun workshop we’ll take origami to the extreme and turn paper folding into unique one-of-a-kind projects that the world has never seen before. Wild origami hats, fun origami decorations and wacky painted origami 3-D sculptures and more!

LET’S MAKE A BOOK !
Ages 9 – 12
Instructor: C.K. Itamura
Thursdays, 3:30pm – 5:30pm
Write, collage and print a book in this workshop. Together we’ll collaborate on creating a fun story, then each participant will make a cover, print a title page and create collage illustration pages for their own copy to take home. We’ll also print a set of letterpress bookmarks to give away to friends using an antique tabletop printing press!

STORY IN A SCROLL
Ages 9 and up
Instructor: Michael Hofman
In this day-long workshop Michael Hoffman will guide participants in illustrating stories they create through the use of traditional and non-traditional brush painting techniques.
Michael Hofmann grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, but spent most of his life in Kyoto as a painter and disciple to the sumi-e painter and Zen priest Jikihara Gyokusei. Michael has had exhibitions of his work in galleries and museums throughout Japan. Since returning to the U.S., he has given sumi-e classes at various cultural centers, including the San Francisco Asian Art Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

EVERLASTING SAND CASTLES  - all ages/for families
Saturday April 12

Design it, mold it, carve it, embellish it and create the castle of your dreams! Bring the whole family to create one or a whole village of castles made of real sand that will last long after the sunset. This will be the first sand castle that you actually get to bring home.
A great art experience building sand sculptures with a special sand mixture that makes them permanent.
A fun afternoon for the whole family.
